Meeting Minutes

Thursday, January 17, 2019

Meeting called to order at 6:30 PM at the Kernville of Commerce Building and began with the flag salute.

Introductions:

  • New Members: Bob Souza, Sonny Niduvitch and Robert Cruz
  • First Time Attendees: Dean Horrell
  • 15 total attendees

Past Meeting Minutes: Kee Johnson read the meeting minutes for 11-15-18. Approved.

President’s Report: Jeff Evans

There seems to be some confusion with the containers:

  • Purchase two 20 foot Sea Containers $2,300 each with delivery. One for Archery Range, one between Cowboy Range and Trap Range. Approved for $5,000 – That will be on hold pending NRA Grants.
  • Purchase two 20 foot Sea Containers with sides removed (to join together for training room), doors cut out, windows cut out. $6,500 with delivery. This does not include doors, windows, setting up, joining together, etc. Jeff will check on prices for this.
  • SHOT Show – Las Vegas Jan. 21 – 25

    • Focus this year
      • Replacement Steel Targets (Some life size targets)
      • DefenCell – Berms
      • Cover/Concealment/Obstacles for shooting competitions

  • Gun Law Status

    • Jeff highlighted a few of the new laws such as having to be proficient in shooting all firearms listed on your CCW permit, a magazine is now somewhat considered as ammunition. It is called a “feeding device” but will be treated as ammunition when purchasing.

  • NRA grants submitted: Still waiting. Has received a couple of calls wanting some clarification.

    • Archery Targets and Equipment

    • Youth shotguns and .22 caliber rifles for Girl Scouts

    • Reactive target systems (plates, poppers)

Whiskey Flat Weekend – Range will be closed Sunday, February 17 to the public. Members okay.

Parade – We can have 3 vehicles. Jeff plans on walking and shooting. It is also okay to drive and shoot. Wants to have shoot out skits in town in front of our booth on Tobias Street. Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon and 2:00 p.m.

Harold Chalker passed away. He was a long-time club member. The family donated reloading equipment and other items to the club. Would like to start a reloading class with the donated equipment.

Treasurer’s Report: Bob Johnson gave the treasurer’s report. Club has $27,795.24.

Income: $11,040.97 (including $100 for brass from Brian Dowd) Expenses: $3,444.81

Membership: 307 + 51 life members Per Jeff, 95 members have used the on-line renewal.

Chief Range Safety Officer Report: Mark Miller advised Bakersfield College is back in session so he will be calling the person who offered to make targets.

RSO training is up in May. All RSOS will need to be recertified. Will schedule a class for some time in March or April on a Saturday.

5 RSOS are needed for trap shoot on February 2nd from 0830 to 1:00 p.m. Call Mark if you are available.

Competition Director: Terry Thompson has scheduled competitions for next year. Range will be closed to all member during the competitions, except those competing.

  • Feb. 2nd Centerfire single or double action revolver, iron sights, off hand. Steel targets at 7-25 yards 50 rounds minimum. Timed event.

  • March 2nd Centerfire handgun, any caliber, any sights, off hand. Paper targets at 7 – 25 yards. 60 rounds minimum.

  • April 6th Centerfire rifle, any caliber, any sights, off the bench. Steel targets at 200 – 500 yards. 20 rounds minimum.

  • May 4th Rimfire pistol, any sights, off hand. Steel targets at 7 – 25 yards. 50 rounds minimum. Timed event.

  • June 1st Rimfire semi-auto rifle, any sights, off hand. Steel targets at 10 – 25 yards. 50 rounds minimum. Timed event.

  • July 6th Single or double action revolver iron sights. Paper targets at 25 yards. 50 rounds minimum. NOT timed event. Accuracy shoot.

  • August 3rd *Aspirin Shoot* Rimfire rifle / Centerfire rifle, off the bench. Aspirin at 50 yards / 100 yards. 10 rounds minimum, each rifle. You may compete with either or both rifles.

  • September 7th Centerfire rifle/centerfire pistol. steel rifle targets at 100/200 yards, 10 rounds, steel pistol targets at 7-25 yards. 60 rounds minimum. Timed event.

  • October 5th Centerfire rifle from bench. Any sights. Paper targets 200-300-400-500 yards. 5 shots on each target.

  • November 2nd *Poker Shoot* Rimfire rifle / pistol, any sights. Playing cards at 25 yards, 7 rounds minimum. (Non-points event)

Committee Reports:

  • Shotgun Group – Joe Price said he is still raking and doing weeds. He did have an inquiry from a lady who asked about a women’s shoot. Will look into having a women’s shoot on a Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

  • Range Maintenance – Hank Blackler advised he and John Bevington will be going to the gun show at the fairgrounds on Feb. 9 & 10. He will have a table if anyone wants to sell anything get in touch with him.

    • Weekly:

      • Dump Trash

      • Replace cardboard on target frames

      • Pick up brass

    • 1st and 3rd Tuesdays – Paint steel targets

    • 2nd Tuesday of each month – Rake Trap Range

    • 4th Tuesday of each month – Remove lead from berms

Old Business:

  • Hats – Trying to get a new vendor

New Business:

  • Mark Miller would like to have only 1 RSO at the range during December and January. Will address this again in November.

  • Jeff is working on contacting someone for lead clean up on the shotgun range. Will try to contact him again.

  • Hank has someone he wants to sell the club’s brass to. They want to pay $1.40 a pound and want us to pay the shipping. Hank will check with UPS and see what it costs to ship 50 lbs. Terry asked if recycling accepts brass. Nothing will change until Brian Dowd is no longer interested in handling this task.
