Meeting Minutes

Thursday, November 19, 2020


Meeting called to order at 6:00 PM at the Kern River Valley gun range classroom and began with the flag salute.



  • New members and first-time attendees – None 24 members present and one visiting past member, Brian Dowd, in attendance


Past Meeting Minutes: Kee Johnson read the meeting minutes for October 22, 2020.   Approved.


President’s Report: Jeff Evans

  • Public opening – Still on hold.
  • Range Orientation/Instructions were written up and are being distributed with memberships
  • NRA Grant Partially Awarded:
    • Received for the women’s and youth program
      • 20-gauge O/U Shotgun
      • Ruger American Rimfire .22 Rifle
      • 6 dozen Safety Glasses
      • 1,200 disposable ear plugs
      • .22 caliber Bore Snakes (Qty. 5)
      • 20-gauge Bore Snakes (Qty. 5)
      • Hoppe’s Bore Cleaner
      • Hoppe’s Gun Oil
    • Monetary Award for $3,907.79 for purchase of:
      • 3 additional 20-gauge shotguns
      • Ruger 10/22 (Qty 1)
      • 2,500 20-gauge shotgun shells
      • 10,000 rounds of .22 LR
      • One Full Pallet of Clay Targets

Request in to the NRA regarding specific vendors to use because vendors we have contacted are charging much more (due high demand and availability) than the amounts the NRA is alloting.  We have plenty of .22 ammo and clay targets.  Can we use that money to put toward the weapons?

  • Archery Equipment and Targets expected later. They will be delivered.  We do not have to purchase them.
  • Suggestion to move meetings to quarterly or every other month for 2021: By-Law revision required to make this change. Vote taken.  Meeting will remain monthly.  Previously tried not having the monthly meetings and attendance was lower.
  • 2021 Whiskey Flat Days – Unknown
    • Raffle Item…Gun Safe?
    • Booth Support
    • Parade Participation
    • Jeff will attend the next meeting in December to see what is going on.



Treasurer’s Report: Bob Johnson gave the treasurer’s report.  Club has $29,163.95

Income:  $420.00        Expenses:  $547.89


Chief Range Safety Officer Report: Mark Miller advised the range is still closed to the public due to Covid.  He has been in contact with Doug Rudolph regarding training with Joe Price for handling the trap range.  He has also been looking at new RSO’S because we have lost some recently.

  • 2020 Year End Results
    • 1st Place – Jason Meadows

    • 4th Place – Frank Llanes
    • 5th Place – Jeff Evans and also received the “Macho Man Award.”

Next event is a poker shoot on November 28, 2020 at 9:00 AM.


Committee Reports:

  • Shotgun Group – Joe Price absent. Jeff Evans advised:
    • Upcoming Events
      • Mount Mesa Men’s Club Trap Shoot???? Probably next year
      • Brad at Pizza Barn will probably have on next year also.

      • Upcoming Events
        • Saturday January 9, 2021
      • Range Maintenance Tim Scrogham advised there is work to do on the running man. He got shot.  Bob Johnson advised he will bring his torch out and heat the steel.  We will see if this fixes it.  Perhaps more telephone poles needs to be used to prevent this from happening again.

Tim also advised that four clay throwers were found and put out at the trap area.  Some other targets were found which will be put into operation.

  • Weekly:
    • Dump Trash
    • Replace cardboard on target frames
    • Pick up brass
  • 1st and 3rd Tuesdays – Paint steel targets
  • 2nd Tuesday of each month – Rake Trap Range
  • 4th Tuesday of each month – Berm Weed Abatement




Old Business:

  • New member orientation video. Joe Margiotta said he can do it but, needs actors.
  • 750 Club. If someone can hit the target at the 750-yard line, three out of five times their name will be displayed on a plaque at the range. RSO verified (Sunday).  Four people in the club already.


New Business:

  • Rich McDonald mentioned that we need to give Charlie Bush at the local radio station a big thank you for advertising our turkey shoot. Excellent advertisement for the range.  Also, Grocery Outlet donated three turkeys for the shoot.
  • Tim Scrogham mentioned that some of the members took a field trip to the Oak Tree Gun Range in Santa Clarita. Their annual membership was $400 but has been reduced to $200 due to Covid.  Their rifle range only goes to 100 yds.  Members have to buy targets and can purchase ammo.  Food and alcohol are available.    Gun store also on site.  All guns and ammo are checked.  RSO’S are paid.
